Dear Friends,
I humbly take this post to a place where no post (by me) has ever gone before. Aptly titled "I Recant" let this post go down in history as a first (and likely only) occurrence. What am I recanting you might ask? How about some of my statements regarding the Twilight Series?...
While I still stand on my point that Twilight is no Harry Potter, I have to admit that the books are way better than I gave them credit for. Stylistically, there is still an elementary facet to them. However, the power lies beyond the words. The power primarily lies in the meaning and the connection. If you haven't read any of them, then it will be hard for you to understand. And although simplistically written, the simplicity aids in the mass appeal- it's relatable. So, I suggest you read them to garner your own opinion. I have thought about Twilight incessantly since reading the series. I have watched the movie more than a dozen times in just days. Hot vampires invade my sleep. I resist the urge to read them again immediately so I can get real-world, grown up work done. However, I do plan to read the entire series again just before the release of New Moon and then God only knows how many times after that. If I get to the point of quoting book, page, and line numbers stop me!
As if that wasn't enough, I have one more thing to recant. And this, perhaps, is the biggest of them all...
Robert. Pattinson. Regrettably I stated that he made a terrible Edward Cullen. I take it back!! I thought he was cute as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, but as a passing character I kind of ignored him. However, he did not go unnoticed. Edward Cullen is written as THE perfect guy. Whether you're
into romance, action, sex appeal, bad boys, nice guys, it's there (except maybe the "thug" persona). If you want a guy who will write you a song- Edward Cullen. If you want a guy to defend your honor against bad guys and unwanted guys- Edward Cullen. If you want someone who will do anything you ask, even if it goes against his grain, even if it causes him pain- Edward Cullen. If you want a smart guy- Edward Cullen. The list goes on. I'd be a liar if I said that the lore of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen didn't aid this attraction I have uneartherd, but that's not all of it. I don't think it's fair to say that him playing Edward Cullen is the only reason people swoon. If it wasn't for Twilight and the role of Edward Cullen, the world would not be as exposed to Robert Pattinson. It just helped to elevate what was already there. Rob brings his own style to Edward. I still stand on my point that I found the costuming to be awfully dissapointing- not as smooth as I would have liked I guess (how many blue collared shirts can one vampir have? Especially when his sister is a clothes horse that refuses to let them wear the same clothes more than once? And the hanes t-shirts? *sigh*). But the costuming was not Rob's choice. After careful study on the matter, I have decided Rob was the best choice to play Edward and that given the lack of direction from Catherine Hardwicke, they all did the best they could with what they had. He has a firm jaw line and fantastic hair. he is tall and has a natural brooding atmosphere to him that comes from not knowing how great he is. So, it fits. I also KNOW that I went into the movie expecting to be dissapointed knowing there was no way some human could measure up to this imaginary character. I will admit that I was less correct on the subject. The flaws in the movie come from other reasons. Anyways, I went and found out everything I could about him, I looked into him and he is fascinating! Even his unkempt appearance is alluring because it's almost whimsical. The ruffled hair, the swarthy chuckle, the music playing, the fact that he has NO IDEA how alluring he actually is is all well and good. B
UT that fantastic accent just makes me want to giggle. For 23, he is a lot more mature (I hope) than a lot of people his age. I don't know him, so I can only know what is put on display for me to see. However, he does seem like a genuine soul with genuine interests as opposed to one of these carbon-copy, cookie cutter stars that are running a muck. He reads a lot so I know he has more of an opinion then he lets on. If I met him, I'd just want to pick his brain and hear him talk. No kissing, no hanging all over him (ok, maybe a photo just for keepsake when my memory of excellent conversation has dwindled in old age). I literally just want to hear his thoughts come out of his mouth.
There you have it. I recant. Don't expect it to happen again.
